I could see her thoughts just plain as day right there on her face.
I drove and I drove and I drove, the whole time sending bad thoughts to my daddy for getting tired of it all and making us live in a car.
“You think all I got to do is snap my fingers and bingo\''
She pounded on top of the car.
“There's the rent and there's the deposit and there's the gas for the car,” she yelled.
“And snap, there’s electricity' and water and phone.
Not to mention food and clothes and doctors and STUFF.”
She kicked the car when she yelled the word “stuff.”
“There is always someone worse off than yourself.”
There was nobody, nowhere, worse off than me.
I opened the soda bottle of water and poured some into the margarine tub.
Willy went to town lapping it up.
I jumped into the bushes and ducked down, my heart pounding like nobody’s business.
