Hi,
I have a new SF 280 I am trying to get set up for a client. When I start it and it goes through the set up (Pre Installed Solaris 8), or if I try a fresh install from CD, I get the following error.
/usr/openwin/bin/xinit Unablr to connect to X server /usr/openwin/bin/xinit No such process
I think it's looking for an X windows session and there isn't one. I do have a monitor attached and would like to do the install by command line rather than gui, which is why I think it's trying for an X session. Can anyone offer any insight into this? How do I get past this error?

I am getting the same error. I'm trying to load a Sun Fire V880 with Solaris 8 and I get to the point where I'm installing off of Software CD 1 or 2 and I can choose the language and choose the locale but once it trys to open OpenWindows to begin the installation process it dies with that xinit error. I need help please. Any would be greatly appreciated.

Jay, I found this. If you are hooked up using a USB mouse and keyboard:
When booting a Sun Blade 1000 from the cdrom which contains Solaris 2.8 HW 10/00, the system will start installing the software. After answering the language questions, the system will attempt to start open windows and get the following error:
/usr/openwin/bin/xinit: Connection refused (errno146):
unable to connect to X server /usr/openwin/bin/xinit:
No such process (errno3): Server error.
Resolution Top
Connect a mouse to the USB port.
When the system boots from cdrom it probes the USB port and if the mouse is not found, you get the error because the mouse is not connected to the port.

If you have a Sun USB keyboard attached then you need the USB mouse as well to start any "graphical" session. If you want to install without a windowing environment try boot cdrom - w (space dash space w) or boot cdrom -nodisplay. When you arrive at the 2nd CD you will need the -nodisplay option. Alternative is to install via serial port a which is only command line.
