Mom said she went to the bank in the morning and filled the gas in the car. The electricity went out and there was chaos in the market, and it will be a hundreds dollars for a wagon no matter what was in it.
Mom gave ten $50 dollars bill to her and said they had to go to the supermarket and get any food as many as they could. Each of the families had their own part. Jonny took the responsibility of getting Horton's food. Mrs. Netsbitt took the paper things like toilet paper. Miranda took the canned stuff. All of the kind. Canned vegetables, fruits and soups. And they got the medicines and aids. Aspirins, Vitamins and Band-Aids. They filled their wagon full of stuffs without any sorting.
They stopped at the every shop that there was no car in the parking lot. Like giftshop, antiques store and convenient store. They got baby clothes, pet supplies, vegatable flats, matches, batteries, candles and a cake and doughnuts. Mom thought they might as well enjoy today if the world was coming to an end.
Then they took all the stuff in the van into the house.
Matt was in Ithaca and he went back home after six days. It was very difficult for him to take a bus back home, and he finally managed to do it.
The electricity went on and out since the doom day. It was hard to predict when the electricity will on because it went on without any information or report. But the offed time of electricity was growing as the time passed. Everytime the electicity went on, they hurried to the washing machine and started to do laundry and run the dishwasher. Sometimes the electricity suddenly went out, causing them to fail to complete the job.
All the society seemed to stop. So schools did. There was no exam this period and the school fed the students only one sandwich for each. The sandwiches got stale every day. Even though the sandwiches were stale, all of the student ate them eagerly as they felt hungry all day long. Most of people seemed to run out of food. Megan ate the sandwich only a half and she asked her friends who wanted it. All of her friend wanted it except Miranda. Every day Megan gave her sandwich to other and Miranda didn't like it. Even though the weather was hot and still summer, they worried about winter. Fortunately they had wood stove, they started cut and collect woods. Matt and Jonny went out to cut the woods and Miranda had to collect kindlings every day.
Telephone was no more available but post mail was still fine. The baseball training camp from SpringField sent email to Jonny and the mail said they had enough food for weeks and they'll open the camp. It was a good news because Jonny was longed for the camp and Mom thought it was good for saving food. Mom was already eating less than before.
Miranda went downtown to meet Megan sometimes. Megan lost her some weight but she was still fine. She believed in god and she told everything is fine and you must believe God without any doubt even though if you get starve to death. This life was no meaning compared to eternal life.
It was summer and temperature was rising exceeding 100 degrees. However the electricity never went on so they had to endure scorching weather without air conditioning. One day when the electricity went on, they hurried to the air conditioner and washing machines but it only lasted for 10 minuites. Plus they had decided skip a meal and only have two meals a day. It made their life even harder.
The conditions were even getting harder. The moon was closer than it used to be and that causes many earthquakes and erupting volcanoes.
They couldn't see clear sky and the water was ruined by volcanic ashes. The ashes blocked the sun and the crops won't grow without the sun.
Miranda made a mistake and it made her very upset. She rested on the porch chair with Horton but accidently left the chair without the cat.
when she returned find him, she found she lost the cat. Horton never had gotten back. They went out and tried to find him every day but they couldn't find him. They thought someone had noticed Horton and when he got left alone, someone might have caught him and eaten him. Fortunately Horton came out after 8 days. He demanded to came in at the kitchen door and he went to his food bowl and ate the food in two gulps. Mom gave him more food and they all watched him as he ate it. It was very happy because she didn't how to tell Jonny that she lost him and they'll never see him.
Dad and Lisa decided to leave Spring Field to find Lisa's parents and take care them. She had ad baby and she had been worring about her parents. So did Dan. Dan and his family set off to the southern city. They belived southern city is more comfortable and easy to get food than here.
- Fall -
Mom found the news from Post office. There will be school announcement for students. Most of the school will be closed. They said only two school will open in this area no matter how much distances from students. There will be no food service in school and no buses. Miranda had to choose Mapple Hill Elementary school because mom wanted to her to go to school with Jonny if they had to go to school.
However when she went to the school some of the girls said that it is very dangerous to go through the town. There was no police in the town and there was rumor that a girl was missing and never came back. She had to go through the town to get to school so she gave up the school. Teacher told that any students who don't want to back to school can take the textbooks for home schooling. So she went to the office and found the textbooks and other stuffs like pens, pencils, blue books and notepads. She took all the stuffs while teacher went outside to take care of her own business.
Mom tripped and broked her ankle. Her injury looked quite serious. There was no one in the house. Matt and Jonny went out to help Mrs. Nesbitt. Miranda let her mom stay there and rush to the garage and took the bike to hurry to get Peter at hospital. She asked for the hospital guards to call Peter but they never let her in or take the message to Peter. They just stop her and didn't any help. She just had to stay there all day long waiting for Peter to show up. Finally Matt showed up there from home and he knew one of the guards. The guard let him into the hospital and few minuites later Matt and Peter hurried out. Peter let her to get in his car and went to home together. - His car has a bike rack. Peter examined mom's ankle and said that she got a bad sprain but nothing's broken. Peter told her to not to add any weight on her ankle include steping on stairs.
Miranda went to Mrs. Nesbitt's house every day since mom hurted her ankle. Because Mrs. Nesbitt was just like one of their family, Mom always invited her whenever they had feast or celebrations or everything. Mom visited Mrs. Nesbitt every day and now she had to do instead of her mom.
Matt went to post office in town and sometimes got some letters from dad and lisa. They had hard time at the border of the city. The vigilantes of the city didn't allow to go in and they had to wait there. Matt got another bad news to Miranda. Her best friend Megan and her mother had been dead. She went to the church where Megan belonged to and asked the pastor what was Megan's death. But She found the pastor hadn't lost any weight and he'd eaten food. Megan died of starving and the pastor ate. When Megan was dead her mother asked him to burry her at backyard of the church. Maybe she recognized that Megan gave her food to the pastor and she killed herself.
Mom tripped over her shoes and hurted her ankle again. Peter had gotten busier than before so they can't summon him. But he came by unexpectedly and examined her. Mom's ankle was not broken but it was worse than before.
The next day when Miranda visited Mrs. Nesbitt, she told Miranda that she knew she will die soon and she don't want her mother to find her dead. She asked her to get her body to the hospital. And she said that she wants they have her things. She wanted Mom had her diamond pendant, ruby brooch for Miranda, painting for Matt and landscape for Jonny.
She died 7 days later. Miranda found her. She was in her bed and looked peachful. It seemed like she died in her sleep.
She took the gifts from Mrs. Nesbitt first, and called Matt. Mrs. Nesbitt left a quite a lot of food uneaten. Their house didn't have any water and the tap didn't work but Mrs. Nesbitt's did. Miranda, Matt and Jonny took all the food, any stuffs that could helped and water. They need her car to carry all the stuffs.
Her peaceful death made mom less sad. That was the best way they hope for.
- Winter -
It came December. It started snowing and having a blizzard. Fortunately they had a lot of woods and a woodstove. They had collected them all summer.
It snowed for 5 days and the snow was 5 feets high. It was impossible to get to the town any longer. They had a ski in their barn. Matt, Miranda and Jonny started to practice skiing just in case. They might need Peter if someone got sick. Furthermore the letter from Dad might arrive at the post office.
Christmas came at last. Miranda had hidden the gifts from Mrs. Nesbitt's and she gave them to Mom, Matt and Jonny. They gave special presents for her. They were all used things from Mrs. Nesbitt's or somewhere but they had a special meaning for her in this situation.
January 5. Mr. Mortensen who lived near them unexpectedly visited their house and begged some medicine. He said her wife got sick and she was burning with fever. Mom refused to help at first but Mr. Mortensen begged so desperately that mom gave some aspirin to him. He had gone without any harm but the problem was different.
5 days later, Mom felt something wrong with her and she told to never come close to her. Next was Jonny and Matt. The only healthy was Miranda. She took the ski and went off to the hospital where Peter was working. Her only hope was Peter. When she got the hospital, there were no people even the guards. The place was so quiet as if no one was there. She finally ran into some nurses but only she got there was every people were dead include Peter. There was strain flu everywhere and a lot of people died. Every doctors tried to save the people till the end of the time but they also all died. People had weaken because they starved and had no power to endure the flu. Her families must have gotten the flu.
Miranda had no choice and returned home. Since then she desperately worked hard for them all. She had to prepare the meal, hot teas, keep the fire to burn in the wood stove, washing clothes and so on. She didn't want to lost her family. Most of all, she didn't want to be the last one to die. One day wood stove gave out critical smoke all over the sunroom where they lived all winter. She opened the doors and windows and pulled all her families with mattresses out the room. It was very dangerous because Mom had weaken that she couldn't escape herself and endure coldness. It was fortunate to have aspirin to take care for them. They were getting better as she worked hard for them.
Mom was the first to recover followed by Jonny. When Jonny woke up he asked for food. However Matt was more serious. He got recovered and had no fever but he couldn't walk any more. He might have sustained serious damage to his body. Matt had worked hard for all of them and he was her hero. Now she had to work for them instead of him.
The Electricity started to come ocasionally. But Miranda thought the electicity was no use. She needed nothing more than anything but food. The food was running out. She skipped too many meals that she was getting weaker. She thought it was the last time to get to the post office. The food was not enough. All of the family except Jonny had decided not to eat any more. All the food left was for Jonny. Jonny was their only hope for new life of the family. They wanted to Jonny to set off to the other city to live on after they all died.
So Miranda left home without any notice to Mom and Jonny without ski. It was Matt's idea that she had to left ski for Jonny just in case.
She walked to the town though the snow. She was so weak she didn't have any power to get back home. She finally made it to the post office and sought fot the letter from her dad. It was no use. The post office had been left for a long time. She found something fluttering when she made up her mind to die there.
A sheet of paper was being thrown by the wind. The paper said "City Hall open Fridays 2-4PM". She walked to the City Hall because it was close to the post office and it didn't matter to her where she died.
Surprisingly there were two people in the City hall. They asked her if she wants to have some food. They had a lot of food to distribute and she had a good chance. They gave a ride to her house and checked how many people were in their house. And they promissed a bag of supply for each a week. They finally saved their lives.
The electicity started to came on more often. Now they could made supper in the microwave. Supper in microwave sounded like luxury to them.
They had four bags of food every week and no more hungry. They didn't need to skip the meal any more. Miranda wrote the last sentence in her jounal.
"I'm keeping my journal for myself so I can always remember the life as we knew it when I was no longer in the sunroom."
The end.
